Lähikoris – Basketball Close to Home

Lähikoris is a fun and affordable recreational basketball programme for girls and boys in Grades 2–5 (approximately 8–11 years old).

Children can enjoy basketball in a familiar environment close to home, with a low participation fee and a relaxed atmosphere.

Lähikoris is a high-quality option for children who would like to play basketball without committing to a competitive team or attending every practice and game.

No previous basketball experience is required, and children are welcome to join at any point during the season. Come and give basketball a try!

Where and When?

Lähikoris practices are held once a week from September to May at the following locations in Jyväskylä:

  • Huhtasuo School
  • Jokela School
  • Kortetalo
  • Kuokkala School
  • Keljonkangas, Aapistie
  • Vaajakumpu School


What Is Lähikoris?

  • Basketball is part of every session, but the focus is recreational rather than competitive.
  • Girls and boys in Grades 2–5 practice together.
  • Children can also participate in four Lähikoris tournaments during the season if they wish.
  • We aim to keep the participation fee affordable so that as many children as possible can enjoy basketball alongside their other hobbies.
  • Unlike competitive age-group teams, Lähikoris does not require parents to take on volunteer, match official or team management duties.

Our Goals

  • To offer children an easy and enjoyable way to continue playing basketball after attending the Lauri Markkanen Basketball School.
  • To introduce basketball to children who are new to the sport.
  • To make it easier for children to move on to an age-group team if they wish.
  • To promote the joy of physical activity, friendship and social interaction.

Price

The participation fee is €90 per season (autumn or spring).

The fee includes one practice session per week and the opportunity to participate in tournaments during the season.

Coaches

The sessions are led by trained and enthusiastic coaches familiar from the Lauri Markkanen Basketball School. All our coaches have experience working with children and encouraging them to enjoy physical activity.

Who is Lähikoris for?

Lähikoris is suitable for children in Grades 2–5 who are interested in basketball but are not yet ready to join a competitive age-group team.

No previous basketball experience is required.

The Next Step – Joining an Age-Group Team

Lähikoris provides an easy pathway into basketball clubs in the Jyväskylä area. When a child feels ready to join an age-group team, we will help them find a suitable team.
